Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is defined as “an anxiety disorder in which students have recurrent, disturbing thoughts (obsessions) they can’t prevent unless they engage inspecific behaviors (compulsions) (Baron & Kalsher, 2005, p. 445).” In the case of seventh grader, John, a recent Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting determined based on his test scores that he was qualified for the gifted program in the area of ELA only. Unfortunately, while John has participated successfully in inclusive programing and classrooms, he is not as comfortable in the gifted class as he should be and the teacher (who did not participate in the IEP) believes John requires a paraprofessional. Following complaints from John’s parents and observations by the principal, it was determined that John (who is Hispanic) is physically isolated. He receives limited interaction from the teacher. This necessitates the development of an action plan because effective communication and collaboration is vital for the academic success of all students and particularlyof special needs students (Muraski & Spencer, 2011). Action PlanThe action plan for John involves a number of discrete steps and targeted interventions. These are:Placing John in a more central position in the classroom so that he can more readily and comfortably interact with the teacher as John and his parents have requested.Allowing John to have extended time for tests and papers if needed, to use a laptop for writing if required, and to have access to multicultural texts that would resonate with his Hispanic heritage (Child Mind Organization, 2016).
