Professional Portfolio Assignment: Nursing Science
Your Professional Portfolio
A professional portfolio is a collection of scholarly writing you have done, both in academia as a learner, and professionally as a practicing nurse. Your professional portfolio is something that belongs to you, which you can share with others who are interested. One example is when a prospective employer requests some writing samples to read when they are considering you for a position. Another example is when the faculty of a university ask for writing samples when considering you for admission to graduate school. Having a professional portfolio means that you will not need to write something new—although you may wish to update and refine what you have written—but instead only turn to your professional portfolio to find something suitable. In college, you may write papers in any course that could be related to your nursing career. It is fine for you to include these in your professional portfolio.
You should keep your professional portfolio and add to it throughout your career. In the NPRO Program, you will be creating a professional portfolio, starting with a resume. If you choose to advance yourself by completing a BSN and more advanced degrees, your professional portfolio will come in handy. Only rarely would you wish to remove something from your professional portfolio. You will add to it, however, anything scholarly that you write that is nursing related, particularly if what you write is published or otherwise read by others.
We are looking for a suitable, online place for NPRO learners to set up their professional portfolios. In the meantime, you should keep your professional portfolio in a safe location and regularly back up your portfolio folder. Some places you can keep your portfolio:
- a folder on your computer
- a flash drive (thumb drive)
- in an online storage place such as Dropbox (this is not the D2L dropbox, but a popular and free online storage service available at www.dropbox.com) or iCloud
You should keep copies of your portfolio, and any other important files for that matter, in more than one location.
